Helping Mark Schulman Hear Better: A Journey with Pacific Hearing

by | Sep 30, 2024 | Hearing Loss

As a professional drummer who has shared the stage with legends like Pink, Foreigner, Billy Idol, and Cher, Mark Schulman is no stranger to the effects of noise-induced hearing loss.

Years of performing on stages around the world, even with the best ear protection, left their mark. By his mid-40s, Mark found himself struggling to hear conversations clearly and missing out on key parts of daily life. That’s when he reached out to us at Pacific Hearing Inc.

I’ve been privileged to work with many talented individuals throughout my career at Pacific Hearing, but meeting Mark was a unique experience. From the moment he walked through our doors, we knew this was not just about fitting a hearing aid; it was about helping someone who relies heavily on their hearing, both professionally and personally, to get back to living fully.

A Unique Challenge for a Unique Patient

Mark’s hearing issues were immediately clear during our initial consultation. Despite a lifetime of wearing protective hearing gear, his exposure to loud music had taken a significant toll. He described the frustration of trying to hear his audience during his motivational speaking events and missing key parts of conversations with his family.

It was evident that his hearing loss was affecting his ability to connect – something that’s at the core of both his personal life and his new career.

Mark’s initial experience with another set of hearing aids had been less than ideal. As he put it, the aids boosted the mid-range but almost too much for my musically trained ear. He found himself sensitive to the phase differentiation and pitch alterations that made sounds feel unnatural.

This left him anxious and reluctant to continue with hearing aids. But Mark is a man who believes in the power of attitude and change, a theme central to his keynote presentations.

Finding the Perfect Fit with Widex

When Mark approached us, he was looking for a different experience, and that’s exactly what we aimed to provide. We introduced him to the Widex SmartRIC hearing aids. These devices are known for their exceptional ability to provide a natural sound experience, something that Mark, with his acute hearing sensitivity, would appreciate.

From the first appointment, our goal was to make Mark feel comfortable and confident in his decision to give hearing aids another chance. We treated him with the utmost care and attention, ensuring that he felt valued every step of the way. Sheila and I made sure to conduct a comprehensive hearing test that would accurately capture the unique profile of Mark’s hearing.

Musicians like Mark often have distinct hearing needs due to their prolonged exposure to loud music, so tailoring his hearing aids to fit his specific auditory landscape was crucial.

The Widex Difference

What made the difference for Mark? The Widex SmartRIC hearing aids’ superior sound quality and adaptability. Unlike his previous experience, these hearing aids didn’t distort the sound; they provided a clean, crisp auditory experience that allowed him to hear every nuance, from the subtleties in his motivational speeches to the background conversations during networking events.

The audible distortion that had once fueled my anxiety is gone for good, Mark shared with us. He went on to describe how the Widex hearing aids adapt to different environments, delivering a natural listening experience that enhances his professional and personal interactions.

More Than Just Hearing Aids

But it wasn’t just the hearing aids themselves that made the difference – it was the comprehensive care that we provided. Sheila and I believe that fitting a hearing aid is not just about the device; it’s about the entire experience. We made sure that Mark felt supported, educated, and comfortable throughout the process.

From understanding his specific needs to fine-tuning the hearing aids to suit his preferences, we provided what we call “concierge service” – a high level of personalized care that made Mark feel confident in his new hearing aids. This approach has been especially important for our clients like Mark, who have unique hearing profiles and require an advanced, customized approach.
