Of the more than 40 million people in America today who have hearing loss, 66% would experience a significant benefit from appropriate hearing care and hearing aids.

Could you be one of them?

You’re probably wondering about that right now, which is why you’re here. You’re looking for advice on how an audiologist can help you improve your life for better hearing.

You might also be wondering if professional hearing healthcare is accessible to you.

That’s because one major factor holding people back from seeking help is a misconception about the investment in hearing aids – especially when insurance company policies are complicated and unclear.

Help can be available, especially if you’re a policyholder with United Healthcare insurance.

This page covers United Healthcare coverage for hearing evaluations, hearing aids, and ongoing hearing care.

The particulars will depend on your individual policy, but our insurance specialist can find out exactly what you are, and aren’t, covered for regarding hearing healthcare.

United Healthcare and Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plans

Since one in three Americans between the ages of 65 and 74 have hearing loss (and nearly half of those older than 75), it follows that many of our patients qualify for Medicare.

The basic Medicare plan does not cover any hearing costs. Yet you’re covered if you have certain riders – supplemental insurance – with your basic United Healthcare plan.

For example, United Healthcare’s Medicare Advantage plans typically allow for a wide selection of hearing aids, including thousands of options at multiple price points, as well as an accredited network of hearing providers nationwide.

And by partnering with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP), United Healthcare’s Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans cover portions of copay, out-of-pocket hearing exams and hearing aid costs.

AARP Medicare Advantage Plan 1 (HMO-POS) – No copay is necessary to see a primary care provider. There’s a $35 copay charge to see a specialist.

AARP Medicare Advantage Choice (PPO) – No copay is necessary to see a primary care provider, while the copay to see a specialist is $40.There’s a $10 monthly premium, but no referral is required. Out-of-network coverage is available, while the in-network out-of-pocket maximum is $6,700.

AARP Medicare Advantage Patriot (HMO-PPO) – No copay is necessary to see a primary care provider, while it costs $35 to see a specialist. There’s no monthly premium to pay and no referral is required. Out-of-network coverage is available, while the in-network out-of-pocket maximum is $5,500.

AARP Medicare Advantage Plan 2 (HMO) – Copay is $5 to see a primary care provider and $45 to see a specialist. There’s no monthly premium to pay and no referral is required. Out-of-network coverage is available, while the in-network out-of-pocket maximum is $5,900.

United Healthcare offers one Part C plan not in partnership with AARP.

United Healthcare Medicare Advantage Choice (Regional PPO) – A $10 copay is necessary to see a primary care provider and a $50 copay to see a specialist. There’s a $49 monthly premium to pay and no referral is required. Out-of-network coverage is available with the combined in- and out-of-network out-of-pocket maximum set at $7,500.

United Healthcare Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans

AARP Medicare Supplement Insurance Plans are offered by United Healthcare to cover some of the costs Medicare doesn’t.

The following plan names must include the words “+wellness extras offer” to qualify:

UHC Medigap Plans A–C, F, G, K, L, N have a hearing discount of the AARP member rate plus an additional $100 discount on hearing devices in the top five tiers of technology and features. These range from standard to premium.

Of course, you can research each of these items yourself to determine your available hearing aid coverage options.

But there’s a better option available...
