You might already keep track of your blood pressure, schedule regular health checkups, and pay attention to your family’s medical history. You may even have a routine for staying active and eating well. Yet when was the last time you gave your hearing the same consideration?

When planning for a healthy future, hearing health deserves a place alongside the other aspects of your well-being. From following conversations at work and sharing a laugh over dinner with friends to understanding your doctor’s advice, hearing plays an important role in how you communicate and navigate everyday life.

At Pacific Hearing Inc, your hearing care journey starts with you. By taking the time to understand your concerns and personal goals, our expert team can help you explore the options available and find an approach that fits your needs and lifestyle.

Think Long-Term: Your Health Today Deserves Attention

It’s understandable to associate dementia with later life. However, research suggests that midlife offers an important opportunity to address factors associated with future cognitive health. That doesn’t mean you need to overhaul your life overnight; you can start by identifying concerns you’ve been putting off and finding the right professional support.

Perhaps you’ve delayed discussing your blood pressure with your doctor. Maybe you’ve noticed that conversations have become harder to follow. Each concern deserves attention on its own terms.

A hearing assessment at Pacific Hearing Inc., alongside regular medical care from your primary care provider, is one practical step toward looking after your overall well-being.

The Study: What Researchers Found About Dementia-Free Years

Researchers analyzed 12,409 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study, examining three midlife vascular risk factors: smoking, high blood pressure, and diabetes. Participants were followed for a median of approximately 26 years.

From age 55, people with none of those risk factors averaged 30.1 years alive without dementia. Those with all three averaged 17.5 years, a difference of approximately 13 years. However, the distinction behind these figures is important, as fewer dementia-free years reflected both an earlier onset of dementia on average and a higher likelihood of dying before developing it.

It’s also worth noting that the study was observational, so it cannot establish cause and effect. Additionally, vascular risk factors were measured at just one point in midlife, meaning the study couldn’t account for how they may have changed over time.

The Takeaway: Include Your Hearing in Your Health Plan

The study didn’t investigate hearing care, so its findings can’t tell us whether hearing aids influence dementia risk.

However, there is a relevant connection to your hearing health. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders identifies conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes as risk factors associated with hearing loss. As hearing changes often develop gradually, you may not notice them until they begin to affect everyday communication.

You might find yourself missing parts of conversations in busy restaurants, struggling to follow discussions at family gatherings, or turning up the television to catch the dialogue. If these situations sound familiar, they’re worth discussing with an audiologist.

You don’t need to know what’s causing the difficulty in order to seek support. A hearing assessment gives you the opportunity to explain what you’ve noticed and explore the options available to you.

Start with Answers About Your Hearing

If you’re unsure whether your hearing has changed, a comprehensive hearing assessment at Pacific Hearing Inc. is a helpful place to start.

Your appointment begins with a conversation about your symptoms, lifestyle, work, and medical history. You can share the situations where communication feels difficult and what you’d like to improve.

Your audiologist will then examine your ears, assess your hearing sensitivity and speech understanding, and evaluate your middle ear function. From there, your results will be explained to you clearly, along with any recommended next steps.

Ready to explore your options? Contact Pacific Hearing Inc. to discuss your hearing needs and find out how a personalized hearing solution could help you feel more confident in everyday conversations.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Does having hearing loss mean I’ll develop dementia?

A: No, hearing difficulties don’t mean you’ll develop dementia. Research has identified an association between hearing loss and cognitive decline, but this doesn’t mean one directly causes the other or can predict what will happen to you as an individual.

If you’re experiencing hearing difficulties, an assessment can help you understand your hearing and explore appropriate support. If you’re also concerned about changes in your memory or cognition, discuss those concerns with your physician so you can receive a separate evaluation.

Q: Should I get my hearing checked if I’m still managing in conversations?

A: Yes. It’s worth booking a hearing assessment if you’ve noticed changes, even if you’re managing by asking people to repeat themselves or choosing quieter settings. As hearing difficulties can develop gradually, it can be easy to overlook their impact on everyday life.

Q: What if I’m interested in hearing aids but unsure about committing?

A: Start by discussing your concerns, listening goals, and budget with your hearing care professional. They can explain which options suit your hearing needs and what you can expect from each.

At Pacific Hearing Inc., we offer a complimentary hearing technology test drive, giving you the opportunity to experience recommended devices in everyday situations. Speak with our team about how the trial works and what follow-up support is available so you can make an informed decision with confidence.
