Through partnership with DeafDefy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hearing healthcare and language access to pediatric populations in crisis zones, Dr. Lajayah Medina had the honor of delivering essential care to children in Lebanon and Ethiopia.
Bringing Hope to Lebanon
In Lebanon, where access to specialized audiology resources is often severely restricted, Dr. Medina worked alongside DeafDefy to deliver critical hearing interventions to young patients in April 2026.
When their hearing loss is addressed early, children regain the ability to engage with their families, excel in classroom environments, and thrive within their communities.
Restoring a person's connection to sound goes beyond physical health; it gives them back their voice, their education, and their place within a community.
“Being in Lebanon opened my eyes to the true weight of untreated hearing loss, especially when combined with displacement, trauma, and limited access to healthcare. In the United States, as an audiologist, I most often encounter presbycusis, or age-related hearing loss. While it presents challenges, many individuals can still maintain connection and communication in their daily lives. What I witnessed in Lebanon was entirely different.
“The children I met were living in silence in a way that shaped every part of their world. Many struggled to communicate even with their own families. Some had been exposed to bombings. Others had been displaced from their homes. Many had treatable ear conditions when they were younger, but because of compounding health issues and lack of access to care, those opportunities for treatment had slipped away. Their realities were complex, layered, and deeply human.
“And yet, in the middle of all of this, there was resilience. There was warmth. There was hope.”
Expanding Care in Ethiopia
During a humanitarian mission across refugee camps in Ethiopia, including Sherkole, Ura, and Tsore, Dr. Medina and her team worked directly with children facing severe hearing loss in refugee settings in July 2026.

For Dr. Medina, seeing a young teenager in Ethiopia whose story hit close to home served as a powerful reminder of why accessible audiology care matters.
“By far, my favorite part of this trip was being able to serve those in need. My heart truly feels the most fulfilled when I’m able to serve people who not only are in need, but who look like me.
“There is something indescribable about seeing yourself reflected in the faces of the children you are serving. I found myself recognizing familiar features, expressions, and little pieces of myself in children I had only just met.
“Then something happened that made that feeling even more real: I met a teenage boy who looked like my brother to a T.
“I mean, the resemblance was uncanny. I remember being completely shocked because for a moment, it felt like I was looking at my own family thousands of miles away from home. It wasn’t just a passing resemblance; there was something about his face, his expression, and his presence that immediately felt familiar.
“That moment changed something for me. Suddenly, this mission wasn’t an abstract idea about serving people on the other side of the world. It was personal. It made the distance disappear.
“I saw my brother in him. And in some way, I saw myself in so many of the children we served.”
